A little bit about us...
Established in 1975, Stoke Gabriel Cricket Club is celebrating it’s 50th Year in 2025. Based at the J.E.Eastley Memorial ground in the beautiful rolling South Hams of South Devon, the club has gone from strength to strength in the last few years.
From our 1st team currently playing in he B-Division of the Devon Cricket League, our 2nds in the F-West division, and our newly formed (2025 season) 3rd team in the H-West Division – we provide open-age cricket to our local community. We also provide opportunities for Women and Girls in both Softball and Hardball Women’s cricket, and our busy All-Stars and Juniors section has an under-12 team for 2025.
We also offer opportunities for Friendly cricket (open-age) throughout the year, which this year featured games against Torquay United FC, VRA Amsterdam and the annual “Villagers” game (club vs villagers)
We’re also very engaged with the local community with regular events throughout the year including Music, Euchre evenings and a float in the Village Carnival for 2025.
Also, our First team managed (after five consecutive finals) to bring home the Ivor Dewdney Corinthian Cup in our 50th Year, managing to beat an excellent Budleigh Salterton CC side with just 2 balls to spare in the final.
We pride ourselves on being a local community club, friendly and welcoming, who enjoy a good days cricket throughout the summer. Our well stocked bar is open on game-days (and for booked events) and we offer social memberships as well as playing memberships.

Our 2025 Season
1st XI
Our 1st Team competes in the Devon Cricket League (DCL) B-Division, after winning the C-West division in 2023. The past 2 seasons they have managed to maintain a reasonable position in the B-division, consolidating and building towards promotion to the A-Division. 2025 saw the first team welcome some new faces, and despite some difficult injuries and absentees, particularly early in the season, managed to maintain their position in the B-division for 2026.
2025 also saw the T20 1st team in their 5th consecutive Ivor Dewdney Corinthian Cup final, managing to overcome a B-division winning Budleigh Salterton side in a very close final – see above for the cup winning side!
2nd XI
The 2nd team played 2025 in the F-division West after being promoted from the G-division West, also in 2023. With a new Captain and some new faces, Kai having volunteered to Captain the newly formed 3rd team, the 2nd team are the F-division West Champions for 2025, and will play 2026 in the E-division West.
Regular availability and some stand-out performances in matches, along with a good team spirit meant they lost only 3 league games all year! They won the division by 13 points and were promoted along with Lewdown 1st XI.
2026 promises to be a testing and competitive season in the lofty heights of the E-division West, considering that 2022 saw the 2nd XI on the brink of H-division cricket!
3rd XI
With the club looking to offer regular cricket to all of its’ players every Saturday in the season, the 3rd XI was launched for 2025 in the H-Division West, playing their home games at Stoke Fleming CC. Also, with aspirations for promotion for the 1st team, the club felt that a pathway from Junior and Womens’ cricket to open-age cricket was essential. Kai Horsborough, after a number of years at the helm of the 2nd XI, volunteered to be the man on the spot and establish the 3rd XI.
It wasn’t always plain sailing, with availability at certain times of the year leaving the 3rd XI short of players. However, thanks to the generosity of players from other clubs who were available, and inummerable “I’ll have a go” friends, the 3rd XI managed to fulfill all but 3 of their fixtures.
They may have only won 3 games in the season, but the work of Kai (and others) getting people out for the club was immense, and has brought a plethora of new faces to open-age cricket. We’re pretty sure everyone who has played for the 3rd XI this year has gained valuable cricket experience – and had an absolute blast!
We’re always on the look-out for anyone of any ability and experience who wants to spend Saturday afternoons in the Summer in a 3 acre field with their pals (new and old). They are sure to enjoy themselves and may actually discover a passion and/or talent for cricket! Give it a go…
Womens' Hardball & Softball
The development of the Womens’ teams continued in 2025, with teams in the Devon Hardball Super-8’s and Womens’ Softball League. Established firmly in 2024, the Womens’ section continues to thrive, offering regular training and games of both hardball and softball cricket.
What has been brilliant to see is the enthusiasm and positivity the Womens’ section has brought to the whole club, and their willingness and drive to “get involved” in virtually everything – organising and participating in the 50th year anniversary float in the Stoke Gabriel carnival, and some even volunteered to play friendly XI-a side hardball this year too! We’re hopeful that the confidence they’ve taken from their continued development will see even more of them venturing in to the “open-age” arena in the near future. We’re also sure even greater success in the Super-8’s and Softball League will be a feature of 2026!
Whether you’re aspiring to play hardball or softball cricket, whatever your age, you’ll be very welcome. All abilities, all aspirations, all women.
Juniors
2025 also saw a new incarnation of the Junior cricket section, led by the incredible Jason Gonifas. His extremely enthusiastic and talented under-12’s came together this year as an unknown and untested group. Supported by Chairman Tom and everyones favourite grenade-flinger Russ Hulme, they were provided with their club shirts and capped at a special ceremony. Welcoming the youngsters to the club in the best possible way.
They played regularly and developed in to a very competitive team with Jason pointing out the bond that had developed between them all – becoming a team – as his highlight of their first year.
The work that Katy and Matt Kerr have done in many previous years (ably assisted by too many to mention) with All-stars and Dynamo’s cricket means that there will be a steady flow of youngsters to the club in the coming years, and hopefully more teams of junior cricketers in the pipeline.
A huge thank you to Jason, Katy and Matt, and congratulations to the under-12’s on their first full season!
